This year at the State Chief's meeting Bowers Fire Company received the Heroic Firefighter of the Year Award for the first time. Three members of our department that were honored included Jerry Wales, Deputy Chief, Buddy Jackson, Engine Captain, and Donnie Foraker. Also honored was Jon Osika who is employed with the City of Wilmington as a paid firefighter and is also a member of the City of Dover fire department. Jon was off duty and in the area so he assisted with our call. All four tried every measure they could to bring the trapped victime to safety while risking their own lives. Despite their efforts the victim was removed from the house but died of smoke inhalation.
